Dear April
This was my reaction to 50+ degree temperatures and bucket loads of rain last week:
"April! Wow. Hi. I... uhh... I wasn't expecting to see you so soon. It's, ummm, great of you to stop by and all, but now really isn't the best time. Do you think you could stop in again in a couple of months?"
Well, April gave us back winter temps but left us with lots of bare ground. I certainly don't remember a time when the whole state encountered such snow-pack-decimating rain. Yup, it sucks. But what can you do except make the best of it? I simply love snow and skiing and am disappointed with weather like this; my heart really goes out to the folks that make their living off snowy weather. Fingers crossed it turns around quickly.
We took off in search of snow and fun this weekend. First stop, Millinocket and the New England Outdoor Center. I can't lie, the skiing was rough at the beginning despite great efforts with the groomer. (Someone please invent a groomer with a big snow gun on the front!) But up top, on Hammond Ridge, the skiing was good. And beautiful views of Katahdin to boot. Not a bad day, not bad at all. Plus, I love the sweet potato fries.
Then we kept heading north to bring a ski trailer up for Aroostook Women's Ski Day in Presque Isle. This was my second year helping out at this awesome event and my second outdoor Zumba session. Only Renee could make it that much fun.
The skiing in Presque Isle was fast but the coverage was pretty good. I had tons of fun co-leading a classic clinic in the morning with The Amazing Kate Parsons and partaking in a delicious lunch chez Cafe Sorpreso. The afternoon was spent doing a little touring around the trails and getting in my own ski before hitting the road again. So, two days of skiing under beautiful sunny skies! Again, not bad.
Yesterday, back in OT, I got a little creative. Sadie and I hiked out to a bog with some Nordic skates (thanks Deb!) and skated around for awhile. Well, I skated and Sadie slid around and rolled on her back. It was a beautiful sunny day, though windy, and a fun way to get outside.
Off to Waterville today in order to experience the magic of snowmaking...
