Celebration Days
I took the day on Friday to go hiking with my friend MC in Acadia. She's moving to Vermont (happy for her, sad for me!) and this was a chance for us to squeeze in one more adventure before she leaves. We received some faulty intel and decided to hike the Beech Cliff Trail, having been assured that it did not have ladders or rungs.
It does. (Probably should have guessed that from the name.)
Decidedly not ideal for hiking with a dog. However, Sadie was fantastic and seemed to sense it was important that she trust me. She was patient and didn't wiggle at all while I carried her with one arm up four ladders. This maneuver did not pass the "Is this a good idea?" test, but we survived! Maybe I need to get a guide book to Acadia since my map doesn't mark the ladders and rungs trails.
Then down by Long Pond we saw what appeared to be a rabid fox. It was pretty mangy looking and actually started to follow us. Eek! I "reported it to the proper authorities" (aka told Daniel, who told dispatch, who called the natural resources staff) and they were going to take care of it. I felt bad for Mr./Ms. Fox. His (or her) little tail was missing fur and just looked so sad. There are no photos from these specific adventures as I was mostly just trying not to get hurt.
The trees hadn't yet leafed out on Friday in Acadia, which made for perfect viewing of the fire scar from the Fire of '47 I talked about a few blog posts ago. The hardwoods (gray/brown in this photo) are what grew back after the fire. You can perfectly see how the fire swept down the valley towards Eagle Lake. This photo was taken on the way up North Bubble.

The weekend was all about celebrations. We headed to Wayne/Monmouth to celebrate my Dad's birthday on Saturday and then Mother's Day on Sunday. And Sadie's birthday was on Sunday as well. Happy Birthday to my Dad and Sadie! We all had fun eating good food and watching the puppies play together. We even took Maggie for her first canoe ride. Two dogs in the canoe together and we didn't tip over.
Spring is in the air. Flowers are blooming. And on Sunday I added two more bodies of water to my paddling/swimming list. Canoeing on Annabessacook and SUPing on the Penboscot. Both of those places will be hit a bunch more this year but it was a start.
